We've already discussed
my kids' fascination with old graveyards. We think of it as a thing to do when we're back east, where all things are older and better preserved. But the other night while walking around Old Town after dinner, we stopped in at a tiny little historic graveyard and took a look around. Turns out we have old stuff here in Cali too, in Old Town of all places!
This place is wicked cool, and bizarre and intriguing and curious, because the graves are marked not just with inscriptions but with
stories. And the stories told on the visible markers don't even scratch the surface of what.. and who.. lies buried beneath the sidewalk and streets of this avenue full of sunburned tourists and drunk locals!
The stories are awesome:
|
Even the most unflappable were somehow quieted |
|
This one you'd expect to gnash and wail over a child's grave. .. she did not disappoint |
|
aaaannnnnd then it got boring for some |
but I was still riveted....
Rest in peace, old bones.

Wow. Love the specifics. And love the Indian Maiden and Indian Babe although that probably means something slightly different now . . .
So interesting, so intriguing, so . . . West!
Love it.

Love that place! I've ventured in there a few times.
ReplyDeleteI love how it's smack dab in the middle of the busiest state park in the state and there is hardly ever anyone in there. Except for you guys. And me, occasionally.
