Our Friend Steven

Approximately one million years ago, Mistah and our friend Steven were talking about the fact that Steven was a teacher, and therefore had summers off, and Bill thought that was great, and he was jealous, and everybody who is a teacher has had and knows this conversation.

"You get the summers off, Steven!" "Yeah, but you don't know what it's like to have a room full of 9-year-olds staring you down . . . " "Yes, but you get the summers off!" "But these kids . . . " "But summers off!"

Bill had a newspaper column at the time, and he wrote a column about that very conversation which came out beautifully, and ran -- as it was every week -- in the paper on Monday.

Steven went to school on Monday and somebody -- weirdly and unusually -- had a copy of the New Haven Register with him that day.  Steven said, "My friend Bill writes for that paper. Oh look, there he is! Oh look, he wrote a column; cool. Oh wait. The column is about me."

I met Steven even before he and Bill had that conversation one million years ago -- I did the the advanced mathematics and he and I have now been friends for 35 years which has got to be impossible but apparently is true.

Anyway. Steven and his Levi -- who we've known not as long, but have loved just as much -- came down on Saturday and we made them stay over and it was as if not one moment had passed in these last one million years.

We had ourselves a Time . . .

. . . and we missed them terribly when they left . .

But the memories, man . . .

. . . they will last the next one million years.

And so will the cell phone photo shoot photos they sent us. Well, they'll last for one million minutes, at least. One million silly minutes.

We miss you guys.

Come back to us.

Windows of Provincetown . . .

We had the great good fortune to find ourselves in Provincetown a few weeks or months or something ago, and my friend Mistah made himself a little art project out of the proceedings, while we were walking around town. "Windows of Provincetown," he called it. I like it.

And I have the great good fortune of Mistah sharing his project with me. I mean, I was there, but I was always like two blocks ahead, impatiently looking behind me, wondering where he'd gotten to this time . . .

I'm going to use Mistah's file names as captions because they are entirely perfect.

Window 1
Says it all.

Sunflower
Yep.

At The Old Colony

Ellie at The Old Colony
Succinct and accurate, and taken inside this particular window.

Governor Bradford
Back outside.

Horsey
Possibly my favorite?

Mannequins
Or maybe this one is.

Blue Window
No wait. I love this one. The blue and the art within and the composition . . .

Booze Window
What's not to love?

Cyclists
Confusing and slightly terrifying.

Guys in the Street Painting
The guys are in a painting, they're not painting.

Mr. Man
I love Mr. Man.

Tower Reflection
I love Provincetown.

Lobster Pot Guy
I love the Windows of Provincetown.

Wine
Thank you, Mistah.

Junior Fielding

It's important to groom the next generation of Field Rangers . . .

To imbue a love of the land and a love of the flowers and a love of the Field to our youngest friends . . .

. . . I think we're succeeding.

We had a visit from some of our favorite girls on Sunday, and it was delightful to see them, and they pretended they were happy to see us, but let's face it: their visit was about one thing and one thing only . . .

Their friend Ozzy.

They adore this kid.

And who can blame them?

Before Himself arrived, we busied ourselves with snacks and drinks and general Field Shenanigans . . .

And then . . .

the Star of the Show arrived and the girls became very busy supervising his every move . . .

They never let him out of their sight . . .

. . . or out of their reach . . .

. . . and they brought him presents!

Ozzy didn't quite know what to make of his insta-fan-club . . .

. . . but he loved it.

He loved it a lot.

These girls . . .

This boy . . .

. . . Our peeps.

Gone Fishin'

Not really. We're not fishing. We have, however, been here all weekend:

The beautiful Cape Cod Bay. And either conveniently or inconveniently -- however you choose to look at it -- we had no wifi and so I leave you with this gorgeousness, and I'll see you next week.
