Spring Sprang Sprung

I've never been a big fan of spring.
.
I know, I know: sacrilege. Everyone loves spring. Rebirth, renewal, blah blah blah. Personally, I find spring irritating. Because spring is not summer.

This year, though? After braving a New England winter? For the first time in 8 years? This year it's different. This year I'm embracing spring with open arms. Well, my arms start out open, but then there's the embracing part, during which they're closed. In an embrace.

Anyway. I'm loving this spring.
.
Yellow is the prevailing color around here, this springtime.

The forsythia is yellow . . .

. . . and the dafs are yellow . . .

. . . and sometimes yellow and white.

The magnolias are busting out . . .

. . . and the azaleas are throwing their blossoms out into the world . . .

. . . so enthusiastically.

And finally I realize that Spring is the season of outgoingness. Of exuberance. Of flash and drama and flair. As if the Universe is seconds away from breaking into song.
..
I honestly don't know why it took me so long to figure out. I love outgoingness. And exuberance. And flash and drama and flair. And I love to break into song. Living in Spring is like being the star of a really great musical.
.
I love Spring.

Yes, that is the one huge prize for enduring northern winters... a true spring. When we lived in Austin, I enjoyed the spring wildflowers (the bluebonnets especially), and in Arizona, the fireworks display of flowers and colors that the desert puts on is amazing. But, you don't feel spring in your bones, you don't want to kiss it and hold it and almost worship it unless you've earned it by living through a cold winter.

That's my opinion anyway. You're still weeks ahead of us in the spring department though, my Minnesota tulips are just now pushing green shoots through the ground and my Midnight Magnolia bush is only starting to show some give in the fuzzy pods at the end of their branches. I look forward to our uninhibited display probably around Mother's Day. By then you'll probably be in swimsuits.

This makes my day. Love when the world turns from gray and brown to pink and yellow and lavender. Yay!

Purdy. Did the galeforce winds that killed your grill last night knock down any of those flowers?

Spring is a distant memory here. We're pushing triple freaking digits! I'm going to cool off in the desert for a few days.

No, the grill is up on the deck, so just fell onto a chair. Not onto flowers (plus Bill took all those shots down at Mom and Dad's Sunday), and NOT onto the glass tables, I'm just realizing now. And I don't think it's officially broke. I hope not.

Lisa, I guess it *is* more important that the blossoms are pink and yellow and lavender, than accurately named (Lisa S thinks those so-called azaleas may in fact be rhododendron; I'm reserving judgment.)

And you're right, Rita. I've earned this one. I think I've earned next spring, too.

I'm with you Ellie. I usually prefer Summer/Autumn to Spring/ Winter. I think it's the amount of rain and humidity that I dislike about Spring.
However this year, I am so *ecstatically* happy that it's spring! I think it's because this past winter was so long, hard and cold. I've begun seeding and doing yard work (something I usually save for the last minute). I'm even enjoying the rain because it's not COLD!

We have no true spring here, and although they can be magnificent, I prefer to not endure the brutal cold winter that leads to them.

I do sometimes miss that manic spring fever feeling though. I could not be contained in school on certian spring days in my youth; those days called for a forged note from my mom, cold beers, and hours of sun on the roof.

This has been one *hell* of a winter and I also share your complete desire to soak in the lovely colors that the sunshine has brought. (I will over look the rain that today brought)
I will say that the time I spent living in San Diego had me missing the seasons and yet I really didn't want to come back when I was out visiting all that warmth and sunshine earlier this month.
Must be due to the first 8 words I wrote...

We rarely have real Spring here. But this year we did. And I share all your feelings of exuberence and joy at Spring. Except now it's almost summer and the flamethrowers are just getting tuned up to roast us. I'll take your Spring any time. And your summer, I suspect. I hope your grill is OK; to think it might be broken is frightening.

I love forsithia. Spring's little way of flippin the bird to winter.

Ok, I admit that when I grew up in the south, I wasn't that into spring. Mainly because with spring came the return of extra humidity and bugs. But now that I live up north? I relish spring. Those 75 degree days are the absolute BEST of the year. (Well, except for the fall days ... I'll always like fall better. I'm weird like that.)

I love spring flowers, and I can't wait until all the leaves are on the trees. Gray-brown gets so boring month after cold month!

The uncertain glory of an April day;
Which now shows all the beauty of the sun,
And by and by a cloud takes all away."

I have friends who quote Shakespeare, and Frank Sinatra.

How lucky am I??
