Greening Up

I went outside the other day and the grass turned green before my very eyes.

In the morning it was beige; in the afternoon it was green. That's how it goes around these Southeastern Connecticut parts, in April.

And the grass is not the only thing greening up.

Rosie is also greening up before our eyeballs.

And so is the Hofstra hostra.

Like our new bird bath? Perfect, right?
 Thank you, Mumsie.

I did the only thing one can do at a time like this; I mowed for the first time yesterday. The grass is uneven and patchy and weirdly un-mow-able in sections -- it's like nylon scallions growing in our yard -- but I persevered and got 'er done.

There's that moment, though. That first moment when you bring the mower out of the shithouse shedhouse for the first time since last fall, and fill it with gas, and check the oil, and pump the little pumpy thing, and get set to pull the cord, and hope against hope that it will spring into life -- that we'll *all* spring into life -- after this long, cold, demoralizing, endless winter.

First pull, baby.

I love how you celebrate the simple things. In the end, aren't they really what matters? And the trees are about to pop - another miracle that occurs when you are not looking.

What Dawn said! Trees here are fully "popped" and it's glorious.

Okay, before I get distracted.... I love that last photo, what a pretty little walkway that is! I don't think I've ever noticed that before.

Secondly, you are so impressive mowing your lawn like you do. I'm not sure I even know how to initiate the "first pull," although you do make it sound enticing. My mom was mowing her own lawn in Aurora, so I should really get off my duff and mow MY own lawn. (Oh yeah, I'm renting, I don't HAVE a yard ;)

Lastly, mom/Pat, those hostra totally remind me of Walt!

Oh, and *of course* congrats on greening up. Finally ;)

I love that last photo. Happy spring! I wouldn't know how to start a lawn mower if my life depended on it. Bill has a manual one for our little teeny yard, but I can still say I don't know how.
